Local politicians have hit back at after far-right British activist Katie Hopkins tweeted about Macroom on Monday night
In her tweet Katie Hopkins warned the people of Macroom to be ready with rumours of asylum seekers moving into emergency accommodation in the area. However she removed the tweet after a storm on Twitter about her controversial remarks
Social Democrat Councillor Ciaran McCarthy tweeted that the majority of people living in Cork are comfortable with immigration and diversity and described her as an "attention-seeking hate monger"
The Department of Foreign Affairs says no new Direct Provision Accommodation Centre has opened in Macroom however the Riverside Hotel is temporarily providing emergency accommodation for up to 40 Asylum Seekers since last week .
The rooms have been leased for three months and are mainly accommodating families
Speaking to RedFM News local Fine Gael Councillor Eileen Lynch says Katie Hopkins reaction does not reflect how people feel on the ground
