Lord Mayor of Cork gives full backing to Simon Coveney as possible leader of Fine Gael

The Lord Mayor says he doesn't believe Enda Kenny's departure as leader of the Fine Gael party will spark a general election and he's giving his full backing to Simon Coveney as the Fine Gael leadership contest heats up.

Enda Kenny officially stepped down from his duties after making the announcement on Twitter last evening. 

Simon Coveney and Leo Varadkar are the two front runners tipped to take over the top job.
