Lord Mayor of Cork to see salary drop of €57,000

The Minister for the Environment plans to introduce new rules which will see a vast reduction of the Lord Mayor of Cork's salary. Phil Hogan has issued a circular setting out maximum amounts that can be paid to the mayor of each council, depending on its size. While Cork County Council will be allowed to pay its Mayor €50,000, the Lord Mayor of Cork will see a drop of almost €57,000. Under the new rules a maximum salary of €30,000 will be awarded. For the past 10 years the Lord Mayor received a salary of €87,258 as well as a councillor's salary of almost €18,000. The Lord Mayor also has use of a car and a driver and an entertainment budget. Councillors will be subject to a new limit of €1,000 each for attending conferences.
