M20 is no longer viable option as projects such as Dunkettle Interchange come on stream

That's according to the Chairman of Fermoy Forum who says they have written to politicians outlining their opposition to proposals for the direct motorway link between Cork and Limerick.

Michael Lyons says other options such as a link off the M8 to connect the two cities should be examined rather than pumping millions into the construction of the M20 motorway

The M20 has been a long-discussed proposal and plans were shelved for the best part of a decade with the cost estimated to be more than €2 billion.

Michael Lyons of the Fermoy Forum told RedFM News that he believes the M20 would be under utilised and the Dunkettle Interchange would be able to handle the increased vehicle capacity:

"We're going to have this fabulous Dunkettle Interchange and it's going to be an under-capacity. The capacity of traffic going through will flow very smoothly when it's done, and that's what we expect to do it. That's why it's been upgraded. And we're delighted to hear it. But with that in mind we feel that the Limerick traffic can travel in that direction."
