Man released without charge in connection with Charleville rape

Detectives arrested the man for questioning about the sex attack on a 17-year-old girl in the Rathgoggin Middle area of the town.

Gardaí are to prepare a file for the DPP after last night releasing without charge a man arrested for questioning about the rape of a 17-year-old girl in a North Cork town earlier this month.

Detectives arrested the 26-year-old man at his home in the Charleville area for questioning about the sex attack on the young girl in the Rathgoggin Middle area of the town in the early hours of Sunday, July 5th.

The girl was walking home on her own at the time after attending a birthday party in the town.

Family members began searching when she didn't return home and found her in a distressed state.

She was taken to the sexual assault treatment unit at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital while gardaí cordoned off the scene of the assault for a technical examination.

Gardaí who confirmed they're following a definite line of inquiry have been studying CCTV footage and have appealed for information.
