Man who vandalised house he was renting handed a two year suspended sentence

67 year old Denis O'Connor of Hillside, Cappagh, Kinsale avoided jail after he paid the landlords compensation.

Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard that pensioner Denis O'Connor, who has spent the last two months in custody pending today's sitting, had caused "devastation" to Audrey O'Mahony and her family.

O'Connor pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to the cottage in Ballinspittle by removing roof rafters and damaging floors and other fittings on dates between December 5th 2015 and July 23rd 2018.

He also pleaded guilty to the theft of a fitted kitchen which he removed from the cottage and replaced with his own kitchen.

Judge Sean O'Donnabhain then heard that O'Connor had removed that same kitchen when he left the house, which meant the house did not have a proper kitchen area.

The damage caused to the cottage was estimated to be around €16,000 in total.

Defence barrister Donal O'Sullivan told the court that his client was sorry for what he had done and said O'Connor had brought €13,000 compensation to court.

Judge O'Donnabhain said he acknowledged the damage and distress caused to Audrey O'Mahony and her family and handed O'Connor a two year suspended sentence.
