Mick Barry to raise the rights of workers in liquidation situations in the Dáil

A Cork TD is to raise the rights of workers in a liquidation situation in the Dáil again today.

Cork Solidarity TD Mick Barry is to raise the matter after he described new Government proposals to enhance workers' rights in liquidation situations as "extraordinarily weak and underwhelming in the extreme."

The issue came to prominence recently during the marathon 406 day Debenhams dispute when 330 workers lost their jobs at Debenhams outlets on Patrick Street and at Mahon Point Shopping Centre.

Deputy Barry's "Debenhams Bill" was passed by the Dáil at second stage last month but a majority of the Dáil voted to prevent it going to the next stage for 12 months.

Last week the Government proposed a change in the law so that liquidations would be subject to the the Protection of Employment Act 1977 which provides for 30 days of consultation along with improving workers rights to information in a liquidation situation

Speaking to RedFM News Deputy Mick Barry has described the Government's proposal as "under-whelming".

"The government's new proposals to address this bias are the most underwhelming legislative changes that could possibly be imagined.

"The fight for fairness and real change on these issues will go on."
