Minimum wage increase in Budget 2016

Minister Brenden Howlin has announced a number of changes in relation to childcare.

It's part two of Budget 16 and the top lines outlined by the Public Expenditure Minister include an increase in the minimum wage and the introduction of two weeks paid parental leave.

Rises in child benefit and the fuel allowance have also been announced along with the restoration of the Christmas Bonus by 75%.

Minister Brendan Howlin opened his speech by outlining how the minimum wage has increased by nearly 20% since the Government took power and from January 1st will be increased to €9.15 an hour.  

Brendan Howlin says the Government is committed to making work pay and says in order to achieve that goal investment in child care is crucial.

3 million euro is being provide to develop after school in school buildings and 2,260 new teachers are to come on stream including 600 new resource teachers 

The Minister also announced plans to extend the Free GP care scheme to under 12's next year.

He says the childcare package is aimed at assisting hard working parents and ease the financial burden.
