Minister for Agriculture called on to tackle illegal burning

The Minister for Agriculture is being called on to tackle the issue of illegal burning head on by changing the legal burning dates to include the month of March.

It follows a spate of wildfires across the country, in particular in West Cork where fire crews have been battling gorse fires on an ongoing basis.

The Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association say controlled burning is an essential part of upland management and March provides the most favourable conditions for burning as it's dry enough to burn safely, without affecting ground nesting birds.

Earlier this week the Department of Agriculture said the owners of illegally burnt land will be removed for payment from the Basic Payment and other land based schemes.
