Minister for the Office of Public Works ensuring flood relief is provided by insurance firms

Minister Sean Canney says insurance is available to people in areas where a flood relief scheme is in place

The Minister with Responsibility for the Office of Public Works says he is holding regular meetings with insurance firms to ensure flood cover is being provided to people who are protected by flood relief schemes.

Minister Sean Canney says he is in constant contact with Insurance Ireland and plans to meet with their representatives on a quarterly basis.

He was speaking as he unveiled plans for an €8 million flood relief scheme for Glanmire which has been hit by flooding a number of times over the last few years.

It's hoped the scheme, which will take 18 months to complete, will be in place by the end of 2018.

Minister Canney says where flood relief schemes have been installed up to 89% of people living in those areas can get insurance cover.

But he told RedFM News that Insurance Ireland have raise difficulties about demountable defences.
