Minister promises clampdown on social welfare fraud

The Minister for Social Protection says Gardaí will be setting up checkpoints in housing estates and in airports to clamp down on social welfare fraud. Joan Burton's comments come after social welfare inspectors identified 50 fraudsters flying in and out of Cork to claim social welfare. The Minister says Gardai will be on the look out for people claiming benefits while going out to work. Minister Burton says there is no acceptable level when it comes to social welfare fraud and has set her Department a target of 710 million euro in fraud savings for this year.
