Minister Says Government Are Committed To Supporting Victims Of Domestic Violence

The Social Protection Minister, and acting Justice Minister, Heather Humphreys made the comments on a visit to Cork yesterday

It follows a report from Women's Aid earlier this week that revealed that almost 30,000 people contacted them last year.

The domestic violence service says the figures show a 40% increase compared to 2019,

And is calling for the family law system to be better resourced to deal with a 'tsunami of cases' that have been delayed due to the pandemic.

Speaking to RedFM News, Minister Heather Humphreys says that tackling domestic violence is a major priority:

"I will continue with that work in the department until Helen comes back. It's very much a priority for me too, in the Department of Social Protection, where we have been able to extend the rent supplement for victims of domestic violence. We are running a pilot scheme to the end of this year. We have extended it 'till then. I want to see that supported and absolutely, can I just reassure people, that government is totally committed to supporting people who are victims of domestic violence."
