New amendment to Road Traffic Act

A new amendment has been added to the Road Traffic Act following a fatal crash in Cork in 2015.

Geraldine and Louise Clancy died just days before Christmas in 2015, when an unaccompanied learner driver forced them off the road.

The two women drowned when their car ended up overturned in a ditch.

According to today's Evening Echo the Clancy Amendment has now been written into the law, meaning anyone who facilitates a learner to drive without a fully licenced driver will also be committing an offence.

It comes as figures show that more than 150 unaccompanied learner drivers were involved in serious or fatal collisions in the past five years.
