New hotline set up for the collection of dirty needles

The initiative aims to reduce the number of discarded drug paraphernalia around the city.
Hotlines are being set up in the city to contact trained personnel about the disposal of dirty needles in a bid to tackle the increasing number of discarded drug paraphernalia being found in Cork.
Recent figures revealed that of the estimated 500 heroin addicts in the city only 300 are receiving treatment.
The Cork Local Drugs and Alcohol Taskforce are now planning to distribute drug information leaflets to schools, businesses and community organisations.
It follows calls to the Neil Prendevillle Show yesterday from concerned listeners who say that the problem of needles use in the city is worsening in particular in the St Ann's park area of Shandon which they described as a magnet for drug use.
Speaking to RedFM News area operation manager of the HSE's drug and alcohol services David Lane says a new outreach worker has been appointed to work with street addicts and dispose of needles.
