New psychiatric unit at Cork University Hospital to open today

It follows an eight month dispute delayed the transfer of nurses to the unit.

It's hoped the opening of the €15m psychiatric unit at Cork University Hospital will run smoothly today after an eight month dispute delayed the transfer of nurses to the unit.

The row centerd on staffing issues and other key clinical concerns which SIPTU and PNA represented nurses were still seeking assurances on, up until yesterday.

The dispute escalated last April when mental health nurse Des McSweeney was placed off duty after speaking out about his concerns regarding the new unit on the Neil Prendeville Show.

In the past month unions voted in favour of proposals by HSE to address their concerns which it's hoped will now allow the opening of the 50-bed facility set to replace the outdated GF unit in the main hospital.
