New Traffic System On Patrick's Street To Come Into Effect Today

The new traffic system on Patrick's Street comes into effect today.

Between 3pm and 6.30pm the only traffic allowed on the street will be public transport, taxis, cyclists and emergency vehicles.

 

All private vehicles are being re-routed along the quays amid calls at Council level for a review of the city's parking policy and charges in an effort to attract shoppers into town

 

One of the key elements of the changes is the prioritisation of bus movements during busy periods after it emerged  that the street contains two of the worst pinch points in the city, with some buses travelling the route recording average speeds of between 1 and 6 kph.

 

City Council Chief Executive Ann Doherty told RedFM News that the reliance on cars is likely to change with investment in public transport and in particular the bus service in Cork:
