New water treatment plants planned for Cork

Irish Water has said it will invest almost €1.8bn between now and 2016 in improving the country's water infrastructure. The State company has identified key problems including the elimination of boil notices, providing a secure supply to Dublin, and fixing the leaks that mean more than 40% of our water is lost through damaged pipes. Plans are also on the cards to to invest new waste water treatment plants in Youghal and in Cork's lower harbour area to deal with waste water from Cobh, Passage West and Carrigaline. There is no funding commitment however for a new water treatment plant for Cork City - upgrades are planned instead. Irish Water has said it still needs to raise more than €500m in additional funding to carry out the plan. It says it will explore all options to bridge the gap in funding.
