Non essential workers asked to cancel driving tests

Anyone who is not an essential worker and is offered a driving test is being asked to cancel their appointment.
Over 80,000 people are waiting to do their theory, and almost 68,000 people are waiting for a driving test.
The Road Safety Authority is appearing before a Transport Committee this morning over the backlog as the average waiting time will take more than 20 weeks.
Chief Executive of the RSA Sam Waide, says additional staff will help ease the demand.
"Pre-pandemic the waiting time for a driving test was six weeks; as a result of Covid-19 and the suspension of services for four months, means the driving test service can only deliver driving tests to essential workers.
"Because we can only test essential workers we are not able to fill all our available capacity - about 25% of driving test slots are going unused."
