All non-urgent elective surgeries have been cancelled at Cork University Hospital as staff struggle to deal with overcrowding.
Patients have been informed of the decision - which was made because of pressure in the Emergency Department.
The hospital is exceptionally busy, with a large number of people presenting with flu-like conditions.
Staff have also had to deal with an increase in patients injured after falls, due to the recent cold snap.
Yesterday 42 people were on trolleys at the CUH - that the highest number in the country.
The rise in overcrowding comes despite a pledge by hospitals to put in place measures agreed with nurses to ease congestion - in return for deferring their strike.
Speaking to RedFM News on the overcrowding issue Mary Rose Carroll of the Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation says the worst pressure is usually experienced in emergency departments:
