Officials fear wave of Scams Using Data Stolen In HSE Cyber Attack

On Thursday, the government received a decryption key which could let it regain access to locked files

However, hackers still have copies of the information, and it’s thought they could start releasing it online.

Dr Sean McSweeney, head of the computer science department at Munster Technological University, says people should keep their guard up:

"This information once, and if, it is sold on the dark web, then it is used by different types of threat actors to formulate different types of attacks. So the way people could protect themselves against this is just a healthy level of scepticism, in terms of whether they're being contacted by people who are quoting their own personal information. No government organisation would do that."
