Old Bar in UCC becomes a calm zone
The Old College Bar at University College Cork has been transformed into a Calm Zone.
The space has been designed in particular for students on the autism spectrum.
UCC’s Old Bar closed in 2016 after 30 years at the heart of the student community.
The Calm Zone is part of a UCC initiative to promote inclusion and will also be used to facilitate wellbeing workshops.
Interim President, Professor John O’Halloran spoke to RedFM news about the transformation of the College bar.
"We transformed our beautiful bar as it was then, into a very different space - what is called a Calm Zone.
"The idea here is to create a space and a place for students that need a different kind of environment.
"The university has 22,000 students, and it can be very busy. We need to create a place for students that may be invaded by that noise and space, and design it in a way that is very special for them."
