Opposition to merger expected at public meeting in the city

It comes after a historic midnight meeting at City Hall last week where Chief Executive Ann Doherty was directed by councillors to initiate legal proceedings against the government which effectively seek an injunction to block the Environment Minister pressing ahead with the merger. 

As part of this challenge Freedom of Information requests have been submitted to both the Department of Environment and the review group set up to examine the merger. 

The majority of county councillors meanwhile are backing the merger and claim it will benefit the wider Cork region and prevent the loss of funds in County Hall that would result from a boundary extension.

Lord Mayor Cllr Chris O'Leary is on the panel of guest speakers at a public meeting tonight in the Ambassador Hotel on the contentious issue and he told RedFM News there's a long road ahead:
