OPW Says The Cost of Tidal Barrier To Alleviate Flooding In Cork is Prohibitive

Initial findings of an OPW commissioned report finds that the tidal barrier would not deal with the fluvial problem

The Office of Public Works has reacted to the latest report by the Save Cork City Group on the construction of a tidal barrier to alleviate flooding in Cork city..

The OPW say their consultants are finalising a report on the costs surrounding the potential for a tidal barrier but their preliminary findings confirm that it is not viable and would cost many times the figures being put forward by the Save Cork City Group

In a statement issued to RedFM News the OPW says any tidal barrier, would only resolve the tidal flooding problem in the City and would not deal with the fluvial problem and, so, defences would still be required in the City.

The Save Cork City Group says any work on quay walls in the city centre is likely to take 6 or 7 years and will cause massive disruption to businesses

Speaking to RedFM news John Hegarty from the group is calling on the OPW to take the new findings into account:
