Over 1,300 Jump Bail In Cork In Last Year

Over 1,300 people jumped bail in Cork in the past 12 months Figures released by the Courts Service show that dozens failed to show up to face charges in Cork City. There is concern over the high number of people who fail to come to court while out on bail. It has also been reported in today's Evening Echo that considerable numbers are re-offending after being granted bail. However Gardaí claim that overcrowding has made it difficult for judges to deny bail. Figures released by the Courts Service show that more than 400 people failed to appear on theft charges before district courts in Cork last year. Meanwhile in first 10 months, 402 people skipped bail and did not appear in court to face the charges. More than 100 failed to show up in Cork courts on drugs charges while almost 40 people on drink-drive charges were no-shows. Some 1,365 bench warrants were issued by the courts after defendants failed to show up for a range of offences.
