Party leaders begin discussing programme for government with members

The battle lines are being drawn in the debate on the programme for government.

Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Greens have begun selling the deal to their members.

Young Fine Gael has said it will oppose the deal, while Fianna Fáil councillors in a number of counties have come out against it.

Last night Green Party TD and negotiator Neasa Hourigan said she can't back the deal over housing and financial concerns.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan though says he thinks the figures are sound.

"The economic strategy seems to be clear, and I don't hear many dissenting voices from the economics community or the other political parties.

"I think in this particular circumstance where we are now, what we need is to stimulate our economy to get it back working, that the right approach is to actually borrow money."
