Pension To Rise By €5 Today
40,000 pensioners across Cork city and county will be €5 richer today, as the increase in the state pension comes into effect.
Age Action Ireland have welcomed the increase but say the Government needs to deliver on its pre-election promise of a €25 euro increase to the weekly pension.
Senior citizens getting the widow’s, widower’s, civil partner’s pension or the carer’s allowance will all benefit from the increase, which is the first since 2009.
However, Age Action says senior citizens across Cork city and county continue to suffer because of continued cuts to essential services, and are calling for an increase to the fuel allowance, as well as the reinstatement of the telephone allowance.
Spekaing to RedFM News spokesman for Age Action Justin Moran says the Government needs to do more for it's Senior Citizens:
