Planning Application To Build Apartments On A Lands At Bessborough Has Been Refused

The planning application for 67 apartments on lands at the former mother and baby home at Bessborough had drawn some criticism

The 67 units which would have been a social housing development in a eight storey building for the City Council was refused on two grounds

The other section of the plans relate to a scheme comprising of 179 residential units in three apartment blocks, ranging in height from five to seven stories.

A decision from An Bord Pleanála on the other 179 apartment units is due on March 30.

It emerged last month that in light of the publication of the Mother and Baby homes report the Housing Minister wrote to the City Council seeking a report on the site of the former mother and baby home at Bessborough

There are concerns that hundreds of babies who died whilst in the care of nuns at Bessborough could be buried on the 200-acre estate on the city’s southside.

Meanwhile..

Four Councils across the country including Dublin City Council have issued apologies to victims and survivors of Mother and Baby Homes.
RedFM News has contacted Cork City and County Councils to see if they have any plans to issue similar responses
