Plans for North Ring Road welcomed

There's been a broad welcome to the news that the first steps in developing the long awaited North Ring Road are being taken.
The road will link the M8 Cork Dublin motorway with the planned M20 Cork Limerick Road and the South Ring Road near Ballincollig which will help to alleviate and improve traffic congestion in the city.
Cork City Council will oversee the Ring Road project as it controls the vast majority of the land the road will be built through.
The development of a North Ring Road has been a long-standing objective of Cork city and county councils and the importance of the project has been outlined in the Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy.
The next step in the process will see the two councils in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland appoint consultants for the initial phases of the project.
Speaking to RedFM News Cllr Tony Fitzgerald says the creation of the road is vital as it will divert HGV's away from the city and prevent bottlenecks occuring in Blackpool.
"We need to avoid traffic congestion in Blackpool, and remove HGV traffic in estates such as Parklands, Farranree, Churchfield and Holyhill.
"These two announcements follow huge housing investments in the local neighbourhoods, massive funding for the northwest regeneration programme, and further expansions from companies such as Apple in the Holyhill industrial estate."
