Post mortems due on two divers killed near Union Hall

Union Hall was the scene of a marine tragedy once again yesterday. Two men lost their lives while diving on a wreck two miles off High Island. It is understood the men - both in their 60s and originally from the UK - got into difficulty on a dive to the wreckage of a submarine located more than two miles off High Island near Glandore and Union Hall. Emergency services were called after 9.30am and a major search operation was launched with up to 100 people involved including Navy personnel, Coastguard air and sea units, local lifeboats and divers. The first diver was rescued and airlifted to Cork University Hospital where he lost his battle for life as efforts to resuscitate him failed. The body of the second diver was found on the sea bed around 4.20 yesterday afternoon. Post-mortem examinations are due to be carried out today.
