Progress could be on the cards for Cork to US route

The route has hit a stumbling block in recent weeks.

There could be a breakthrough in sight which will lead to the Cork/US flights getting off the ground.

The Irish Examiner is reporting that a senior government source has confirmed that the European Commission has triggered an arbitration process in an effort to break the deadlock in the transatlantic route.

Fears have already been expressed that the planned Cork to Boston flights won't be delivered in May as a U.S licence has yet to be granted to Norwegian Air International which will be operating the route.

It's now understood that a clause contained in the Open Skies Agreement has been invoked, which will see all sides sitting down in an arbitration style process.

That process may see the launch deadline set for May pass, but it's known that the airline is still committed to the route.

Speaking to RedFM News when he was in Cork on Friday the Taoiseach Enda Kenny said he is very anxious for the airlink to go ahead.
