Proposals To Establish Supervised Injection Centres In Cork Have Been Thrown Into Doubt
It's after planning permission for a similar facility in Dublin was refused.
Merchants Quay Ireland had applied to run the facility on behalf of the HSE from its building in Dublin City Centre.
However the council turned down the proposal over concerns it would have a negative impact on tourism.
In May RedFM News revealed that a new study had identified Grand Parade and Oliver Plunkett Street as locations where injection centres could be set up in Cork city.
At that time the HSE said the future of any such centre in Cork depends on the success or otherwise of the facility in Dublin but today's planning refusal throws any plans for a similar project in Cork into doubt.
Merchants Quay Ireland says Dublin city Council's decision will put "vulnerable lives at greater risk".
Local Cllr. Cieran Perry thinks the facility would have just maintained people in addiction:
