Protest over rent taking place in the city

It's in a bid to draw attention to rising rents Leeside.

A protest is being staged outside a property for rent on Castle Street in the city by the Anti Austerity Alliance.

It's been mounted by the group to highlight what they describe as the growing rents scandal in the city and to make the case for rent controls.

The property at 9 Castle Street is owned by international property investment firm Clarendon Properties and one bedroom apartments at that address were recently advertised by local letting agency €1200 euro a month.

Rents vary for similar properties in the city and can fetch as much as €1500 a month.

Anti Austerity Alliance councillor Mick Barry says people are being priced out of the market and others are just one rent increase away from being made homeless.
