Recent Reviews Show Increased Garda Surveillance On Crime Gangs

Applications for covert operations are up 10% on the last 12 months

The first annual review of the Criminal Justice Surveillance Act shows an increase in Garda surveillance of crime gangs.

Gardai applied for 178 covert operations in the year to the end of July, an increase of 10% on the previous 12 months.

There was also an increase in the number of tracking devices used, up from 103 to 132.

The review was carried out by Justice Michael Twomey - he says without the powers authorised by the act, a lot of criminal activity would go undetected.
