Record Number Of Kidney Transplants Last Year

There were a record number of living kidney transplants last year.
Fifty people donated their kidneys to loved ones via the Living Kidney Donor Programme - a jump from 33 in 2015.
Overall, 280 organ transplants were carried out during 2016 - the second highest number ever - with an average of 23 transplants per month.
These included a total of 172 kidneys, 58 livers, 35 lungs and 15 hearts.
Welcoming the news, Health Minister Simon Harris encouraged everyone to consider organ donation and to share this intention with their loved ones.
He added that he's prioritised the development of legislation to provide for an opt-out register for organ donation.
