Report Finds Man, 31, Died In Cork Prison After Being In Custody For Less Than 24 Hours

A report by the Office of the Inspector of Prisons into the 2018 death of the unnamed man found that due to overcrowding, the man was accommodated on a mattress
Despite being regularly monitored, he was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead at the Mercy University Hospital.
He had a history of alcohol addiction.
The report made several recommendations such as providing prisoners with beds instead of just mattresses, holding prisoners who need emergency alcohol withdrawal medication in special observation cells, and reviewing the epilepsy seizure management protocol.
