Self Harm Attendances At Hospital Emergency Departments Spike On Most Bank Holiday Weekends

The link to alcohol is more pronounced on Bank Holidays.

The finding was made by Dr Eve Griffin of UCC and the National Suicide Research Foundation in a study which also revealed that this pattern is more common among men. 

New Year's Day is the worst day of the year for self-harm presentations followed by St Patrick's Day when on average 42 people are treated for self harm in hospitals around the country.

Dr Griffin says the findings of her survey show that national strategies aimed at reducing alcohol consumption should be intensified during public holidays:
