Senator Jerry Buttimer Profoundly Sorry For Attending Controversial Golfgate Event In Galway
The Fine Gael politician stepped down from his role as deputy chairman of the Seanad almost two weeks ago
He stepped down following the revelation that 81 people attended an Oireachtas golf dinner in Clifden despite regulations limiting the amount of people allowed to gather in places such as hotels.
Former Agriculture Minister Dara Calleary and former EU Commissioner Phil Hogan stepped down from their roles in the wake of the controversy, while ex-attorney general and current Supreme Court judge Seamus Woulfe will have his attendance at the event reviewed by retired judge Susan Denham.
Senator Buttimer says he recognises his actions fell short of his responsibilities and he understands why people are so annoyed by the debacle.
