Social Housing Programme begins Leeside

One of the biggest social housing programmes in the State is beginning to see fruition in Cork.

1300 houses are being provided by the City Council to tackle the city's social housing problem and aims to significantly reduce the numbers on the housing waiting list which currently stands at 4,500.

The houses are coming on stream through new construction, house purchases, social leasing and the restoration of vacant housing units.

400 new units will be under construction on 18 sites throughout Cork city by early May, at a total cost of  approximately €97 million and one of the completed schemes at Sheridan Park on the Tramore Road was offically opened today by the Housing Minister.

Speaking to RedFM News the City's Lord Mayor Cllr Des Cahill, says this project will go a long way towards providing a solution to the huge demand for social housing in the city.
