Spotlight back on city boundary extension plans

Plans to extend the city's boundary are back in the spotlight again today after a group representing 900 community and voluntary organisations have voiced their opposition to the proposals. 

The Public Participation Network has expressed concerns that rural areas will become victims of the changes which will see the county council lose nearly  €50 million a year in revenue from commercial rates and local property tax.

The McKinnon Review recomended that areas such as Cork Airport, Ballincollig, Blarney, Glanmire, Little Island, and Carrigtwohill be included in the city council's remit with compensation to be paid to county council.

However the PPN have expressed fears that city council will be unable to provide compensation as well as taking on the new areas. 

Concern has also been expressed by a number of county councillors about the changes however in an open letter The City's Lord Mayor Cllr Tony Fitzgerald has accused the county council of spreading falsehoods and of attempts to whip up unnecessary fear in communities.
