St. Vincent De Paul Says When Families Fall On Hard Times The First Thing They Cut Back On Is Food

The charity says one in three calls it receives are related to food poverty.
Rising housing costs means that food is one of the few areas of expenditure that families have discretion over on a day-to-day basis.
Dr Tricia Keilthy of the St Vincent de Paul says that while food costs have dropped in recent years, people living in rural areas without access to a car can't take advantage of deals and offers in the larger supermarkets.
Speaking to RedFM News Dr Keilthy says when children go to school hungry it negatively impacts on their well-being and learning:
