State Could Face Fines Over Haulbowline Clean Up

'Friends of the Irish Environment' have lodged a complaint with the European Commission

'Friends of the Irish Environment' have lodged a complaint with the European Commission claiming the State has failed to fully progress the decontamination of the site, based on a ‘whole of island’ approach.

The environmental group claims the State could be hit with daily fines from the European Court of Justice.

The site of the former Irish Steel plant has undergone a multi million Euro clean up with plans for a public park in place however Cork TD Seán Sherlock says €61 million was originally allocated but only €23 million has been spent so far.

Speaking in the Dáil, Minister for the Marine Michael Creed, says preparatory work on cleaning up the island is underway.
