Garda Tony Golden will be laid to rest following a State funeral in Co Louth this afternoon.

The father of three was shot dead in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Omeath last Sunday.

The 36-year-old was yesterday returned to his wife Nicola and his three young children Lucy, Alex and Andrew. He lay in repose at their family home ahead of today’s service.

He has been hailed as a hero by the family of domestic violence victim Siobhan Philipps - who say he laid down his life to protect her. They say there are ‘no words to express’ their gratitude for his bravery.

President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny - along with the Garda Commissioner and Justice Minister - will join Tony Golden’s family, friends and colleagues for requiem mass at the Church of St Oliver Plunkett in Blackrock at noon.

Large crowds are expected to gather outside for the full State funeral - which will come ahead of a private burial at St Paul’s Cemetery in Heynestown.

The Golden family have asked that instead of flowers - donations can be made to the North Louth Hospice and Homecare Foundation.
