State investment needed to keep creches open
The State needs to invest €1 million euro to keep seven Cork community creches open.
That's according to Cork City Childcare, who say the creches are on course to close in September because of new Government regulations.
The Community creches can no longer rely on untrained community employment workers, and must hire qualified staff at an additional cost of €24,000 per staff member.
Located in Togher, Ballypheahane, Shandon, Mayfield, Ballyvolane, Mahon and Churchfield, they provide early intervention for vulnerable babies and toddlers, and play a huge role in family support in the areas.
Speaking to RedFM News Cork City Childcare co-ordinator Kathryn O'Riordan says targeted early intervention funding is urgently required in order to keep the creches open:
