Stigma and shame surround people battling with mental health difficulties

People are being advised to reach out and ask for support

A Cork woman who has been battling depression since she was a teeanger says the only way to break the stigma surrounding suicide is to speak out about how mental health.

Ellen Downey says because she didn't speak to anyone, her recovery didn't begin until her mid twenties, at which point she had already attempted to take her own life. 

The Mitchelstown woman's message coincides with World Suicide Prevention Week.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM Ellen says people should reach out and ask for help.
