Students Object To Proposed Income Contingent Loan Scheme

Students in Cork could have to repay €160 a month until aged 33 under a new proposed - study now - pay later scheme.
The income contingent loan scheme is one of a number of options outlined by the Government on the future funding of third level education.
The scheme is to be put before an Oireachtas committee on Wednesday amid calls by UCC and CIT students for senators to reject the proposal.
After years of austerity-era spending cuts and rising student numbers, universities and colleges say urgent decisions are needed to provide funding into the future.
However students say a decision to go ahead with an income contingent loan scheme will increase emigration as students struggle to repay their loans.
