Students warned of accommodation scam operating in the city

The scam appears to be targeting foreign students in Cork city
An accommodation scam which appears to be targetting foreign students in Cork city has been uncovered on the Neil Prendeville Show.
Dermot, a Cork taxi driver who works in the city out of the Airport, contacted this radio programme this morning and outlined how he picked up a girl last Sunday week who asked him to take her to her new accommodation on Hartlands Avenue.
She had organised her accommodation over the internet and had internal pictures of the property,at No 12, however the taxi driver said when they got to her destination they found that the property did not exist.
He drove her to the nearest Garda station and there she outlined how she had paid a €600 deposit and €400 for her first month's rent but Gardai say it had all the classic signs of a scam
Dermot told the Neil Prendeville Show that the young student was lucky that she was able to turn to her parents for financial help to secure proper accommodation in the city
