Sun-lovers being reminded to protect their skin when out and about this Bank Holiday weekend

The HSE National Cancer Control Programme and Healthy Ireland have a new campaign to reduce the risk of skin cancer

Ultraviolet rays from the sun are strongest from April to September and there are 13 thousand cases of skin cancer every year in Ireland.

HSE Consultant in Public Health Medicine Dr Trina McCarthy says sunscreen is vital:

"So what we'd recommend to people is to follow the sunspot the healthy Ireland Sun Smart five S's. So when people would know most would be to slop on sunscreen and we often do that but we must remember to reapply or sunscreen regularly as well. That's the last time defence or is slipping on buildings to cover your skin, such as wearing long sleeves or t-shirts with sleeves will obviously protect your skin better slapping on a wide brimmed hat."
