Surgeries cancelled at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital due to staff shortage
Up to 50 surgeries at the orthopaedic clinic have been cancelled since May
Two surgery sessions a week have been cancelled at the South Infirmary in the past five months due to the shortage of staff.
Almost 6000 patients are now waiting to undergo knee, hip and back surgeries with 76% of those waiting nearly 15 months to be seen for the first time.
According to a report in the Evening Echo the clinic has a shortage of at least 14 nurses.
The issue was raised at an Oireachtas Committee by Senator Colm Burke who is calling for second centre of excellence for Cork.
Meanwhile the South Infirmary say there is a particular focus on patients waiting the longest to be seen and urgent patients are being prioritised.
