Survey Of Archdioceses And Dioceses Reveal Challenges Facing Catholic Church

A survey of archdioceses and dioceses around the country highlights the challenges the Catholic Church is facing due to the ageing profile of priests and the fall in ordinations
The Irish Examiner reports that the survey revealed that a small but growing number of parishes are without a resident priest and in some areas there is a shrinking number of masses, and limitations on when ceremonies such as weddings and baptisms can be conducted.
In the diocese of Cork and Ross just four new priests and two deacons have been ordained in the last three years however every parish has a full-time priest or priests assigned to them
Meanwhile in the Diocese of Cloyne in the last five years two priests and six deacons have been ordained and appointed to parishes to assist. Some parishes across the Diocese have reduced masses and changed mass times with pastoral councils set up in many parishes to assist priests
