SVP: 20% Increase In Calls For Help In First 3 Months Of 2021

Saint Vincent de Paul says it has dealt with a dramatic increase in calls so far this year

The charity has recorded a 20% increase in calls for help this year alone as the fallout of the pandemic continues to be felt.

In addition to typical requests for support with food and energy bills, SVP says many families have been struggling to cover the IT costs associated with remote learning.

Speaking to RedFM News Regional Co-Ordinator of St Vincent De Paul, Gerry Garvey, says unexpected expenses such as laptops, tablets, and broadband have put a huge strain on some families:

"You've got the traditional calls from people just needing a little hand up, when it comes to foods and heating their homes and stuff like that. But I think with the ongoing situation of home-schooling, for a lot of parents, it does mean huge extra pressures. For example, a lot of kids are having to work from home and login online and they may or may not have access to Wi Fi in their homes, or they may not have mobile phones or suitable mobile devices. So there's been a huge, huge pressure there to provide mobile devices to families to help them to be able to manage the home schooling."
